THE RULE OF THE ORDO SANCTUS CHIROS, RENEWED
“Manua Dei inter Societae”

We undertake to live in accordance with the Rule of the Ordo Sanctus Chiros

“We will be sanctuary, Lord, we will Worship thee here,
We will serve thy people Lord, heal and fellowship”

As an order we are called to be God’s Holy Hands. We translated this as Sanctus Chiros, naming ourselves using the ancient church languages of Latin and Greek. In particular we offer the Word to the world with open hands, in the five fingers of Sanctus Chiros: Sanctuary, Worship, Service, Healing, and Fellowship. We seek to live out this commitment in our daily lives, bringing ourselves and those whose lives we touch closer to Christ.
-Acts 2:42-47, 2nd Cor. 8:1-5, Gal 5: 22-25

We will be and provide Sanctuary

“Sanctuary to all in need, food and shelter and rest,
In life’s chaos a place of peace, laughter-filled and blessed."

We try to be a safe and holy space for ourselves and others, providing opportunity for growth and rest, and for the support of other ministries. We have found that peoples’ need for Sanctuary varies from a cup of tea and a place to sit down to a safe place to sleep for a domestic violence victim. In our living spaces and at conventions we have set aside space where we and others may find Sanctuary.
-Matt 12: 18-21, Heb 10: 19-23, James 1:19-27

We will Worship God with hearts and hand and help others in their Worship

“We will build thee an altar Lord, where we make our camp,
And as Abraham long before, serve thee in this land.”

We seek to provide living Worship experiences and feel that offering Holy Communion at each convention and coming together to worship are major parts of our work .We promote the understanding of God as an actual person and power in peoples’ lives, not just stage dressing or tradition. We bring joy, laughter, and humor to our worship of God. In our communities and living spaces as well as conventions we will make space and time for God.
-Phillip 3:3, Isa 61:10-11, 2nd Sam 6:14-16

We will Serve God’s people, however or whether they know God

“In conventions and in our homes, we will serve as we may,
Each according to skill and need, walk the servant’s way.”

We offer our hands as God’s hands, turning to whatever area of Service seems appropriate, whether stacking chairs or serving meals. It is not important to get credit for service, but rather we try not to stand around when we can give help and be an example of right action. We try to speak for love and grace and wonder in our interactions, wherever we are and whomever we are with.
-2nd Cor 9:12-14, Phillip 2:9b, Matt 12:18-21

We will be a Force and Voice for Healing

“Use us Lord, as the healing hands, in this hurting place,
Help us bring comfort in thy name, fill us with thy grace”

We know well the profound need for a soft touch and a voice when we are hurting or in fear. We earnestly desire to be a healing presence by listening, praying, anointing and laying on of hands, meditating, and peacemaking. We especially seek to be a balm for those both persecuted for and in the name of, Christ. We turn to Jesus and say, “Lord make us instruments of thy peace.”
-Rom 14:16, 1st Cor 12:9b, James 5:14-16

We will share in Fellowship

“As we gather to work and play, let us never forget,
We’re all one family in thy name, con and Christ well met.”

We all need the comfort and joy of fellowship with other believers. We take time to come together with our family in Christ. We laugh, sing, pray for and with each other, work together and break bread together. We spend time with our fellow-workers in our communities in conventions the Good News is shown best in the communion of people blessed with its vision and grace we celebrate our diversity, relish deep discussions, and honor each other’s beliefs.
-Rom 15:31, Phillip 2:1-12, Heb 10:24-25, 1st John 1:6-7

We have chosen, with God’s help, to live this Rule to the best of our ability

“Help us Lord, in this fivefold work we have promised to thee,
Guide us all in thy Holy will for our ministry."

We seek through living the Rule of the Ordo Sanctus Chiros to offer our lives and works to God. We acknowledge our mission to serve the speculative fiction (science fiction and fantasy) fan community as our Vocation among those who dare to live their lives dreaming of what may be. We see in this Vocation a call to us to dare in our own lives to live the dream of becoming more deeply disciples of Christ Jesus and to share our walk with others.
-Phillip 1:3-6, 4:3-9, Eph 4:1-6

Many people have also heard of the Monastic triple oath, the meaning of the three knots in a cincture: Poverty, Chastity, Obedience.  A better understanding of these values - and what possible relevance they could have to our day-to-day lives, would be this:

Poverty:        Not my stuff but Thine.

Chastity:    Not my desires but Thine.

Obedience:      Not my will but Thine.

We invite inquiries on living a Rule in real life, and what guidance the Monastic values offer all spiritual people. -- OSC
